But I thought this was a *music* blog?

Sure it is. But I bet you’re hungry. Or maybe you just ate. I did. Now I’m writing, while listening to music. (Carsie Blanton.)
Many of the guests at our shows bring food and drink to share during the break, which makes the intermission lots of fun for anyone who didn’t have quite enough time for dinner. Often, we’ll bake a fresh batch of our notorious Church House Saints and Sinners Spice Cookies, which if we can figure out how to start selling, will probably pay for our retirement. And usually during the second set of music you can smell whatever is in the oven for the performers’ dinner after the show.
Tonight it would have been spicy chocolate chicken, with roasted root vegetables, carrot mashed potatoes (an experiment which sort of worked) and a couple of spoons of Ben and Jerry’s for dessert.
When Sam Lardner brought his band Suite Mediterranea here from Spain, I made a meal the band voted as “best food of the tour.” Which I guess isn’t saying much, considering the junk most working musicians end up having to eat, since they’re usually working while everyone else is eating, but hey, the praise sounded good in mouth-too-full-to-talk-Spanish. (If I remember correctly, the phrase Juan used that Sam translated was, “My stomach is so happy it is weeping for joy.”
The point is, food and music go together, well, like dinner and a show.
Often, the artists we present come from regions with unique and distinctive food traditions. We hope to experiment with and post the best recipes we can find which relate to those traditions so you can get into the spirit of things, either by sharing your favorite recipes or by trying some of ours.
As I write this, we’ve got artists coming soon from Texas and from South Carolina. (Something tells me there might be some barbecue in the picture…) And, despite the fact that Debi and I almost got run out of Amarillo, Texas on a rail when we asked where we might find something other than steak for dinner*, I promise we’ll try to find some recipes for vegetables (besides beans).
Next post: our approach to food, and why we love it…
* Coming soon, the story of Betty Bob’s Truck Stop Heaven, or, Why To Love Steak in Amarillo, Even If You’re Vegetarian…
